Congratulations to dental alumni Nidhi Parmar and Gabby Thompson who have recently had a research paper accepted for publication in the prestigious Journal of Orthodontics. The title of their article is “Microbial colonisation associated with conventional and self-ligating brackets: a systematic review”.
This systematic review originated from their Year 4 Evidence Summary project and identified eleven randomised controlled trials comparing microbial colonisation following the placement of either conventional brackets or self-ligating brackets. Just under half the studies included showed no difference in microbial colonisation between the bracket types. The remaining studies reported mixed results. They concluded that further work is required to standardise outcomes in clinical trials and to determine the longer term effects of bracket placement and type on the oral microbiome.
