Emily Black awarded prestigious scholarship!

We are delighted to report that final year BDS student Emily Black has been awarded with a very prestigious award: A scholarship for the Healthcare Leadership Academy!

The HLA aims to nurture leadership, foster frontline innovation and to empower the next generation of clinical leaders. Their internationally recognised and innovative scholarship programme welcomes healthcare professionals and students and gives them the tools and a community of support to help maximise their potential as healthcare leaders. Over the 12-month programme scholars will be involved in developing and delivering a project, alongside mentoring and learning opportunities. This is a fantastic opportunity for healthcare professionals to both develop themselves as professionals and healthcare leaders, but to also use the HLA as a platform to take their ideas forward and change the future of healthcare.

Emily said:

“I applied for a scholarship for the Healthcare Leadership Academy upon reading a call for dental students to apply to the programme in a weekly bulletin. It was written by Dr Kathryn French, a clinical research fellow in oral surgery here at BDH. Upon reading into the programme, I realised what a fantastic opportunity it would be to be able to develop my leadership skills so early on in my career. I applied before Easter (in the middle of finals revision!) and had an interview around a month ago. I didn’t realise how competitive the process was going to be, but I am absolutely overjoyed to have obtained a scholarship for the 12-month programme starting in September. Alongside my Academic DFT post in Bristol next year, I am hoping to develop skills to help bring dentistry back to the forefront of the healthcare table. Following my intercalation in Global Health at Bristol I’ve retained a real interest in inequalities particularly within healthcare access, and I am looking forward to meeting like-minded healthcare leaders of the future in September!

I just wanted to say a massive thank you to Dr French for all her support throughout my application.”

This is an exceptional achievement and we congratulate Emily wholeheartedly!
